At the heart of many of our present cultural tensions and questions lies the core question: “What is a human person?” What features define human life? How do we find hope and joy in the midst of seasons of suffering and dying? How do we care for the vulnerable? In our society, many people face these questions in medical spaces and, as such, see them as primarily medical questions. In reality, they are universal human questions, that everyone must answer in one way or another. The Gospel is good news: a good answer to these questions! The Gospel is good news for our souls, for our minds, and for our frail, beautiful bodies. What, again, is a human person? A person is, first, a gift. As Christian physicians, we should be uniquely positioned to see this, and to therefore witness the power of the Gospel to those who encounter these deep human questions while in our care. But how do we do so? And what do we need in order to do so? In these talks, we will consider key theological resources for understanding some of God’s most important gifts to us: the gift of ourselves and the gift of each other. We will connect these core theological commitments to particular cultural conversation and ethics questions. We will also consider the ways that we need to be formed in order to witness the power of the Gospel to those around us.
